Slide guitar, harmonica, African blues guitar and soul vocals all feature in the fresh and vibrant sound of Robin Auld. An award winning artist with an international CV spanning twenty albums, he's performed and recorded in New York, London, Glasgow, Nashville and played events like Womad, the SA National Arts Festival, Belladrum Tartan Hearts, Gold Coast Oceanfest and Cambridge Folk Festival.
Born to Ayrshire Scots parents in Zambia, Robin's childhood was spent alternating between Southern Africa and Scotland; a journey reflected in the African and Celtic influences in his music. He learned to play the guitar by listening to Hendrix, Ry Cooder and Neil Young, also absorbing influences from the various guitarists of Southern Africa to make up the contemporary mix of his sound today. He is currently based in the UK. Comfortable with either an acoustic or a Stratocaster, Robin performs solo at roots acoustic gigs and does electric gigs with a 3 piece line-up.
The beach and surfing were the main elements of his early years in Cape Town, where he started out playing as a sideman guitarist in various seminal Cape Town line-ups before going on to write and record his own songs. He had several hits in SA with producer and fellow South African Kevin Shirley before embarking on the journey to take his music abroad. Over the years many of Southern Africa's top musicians have appeared on an Auld album and the credits include musicians like Anton Fig, Louis Mhlanga, Barry van Zyl and Johnny Clegg. Along with many tours of his own, he's opened for and performed with artists such as Osibisa, Michelle Shocked, Angelique Kidjo, Jackson Browne, Lloyd Cole and Seasick Steve.
Having released through both major and independents, he releases through his own label, Free Lunch, which also publishes the novel "Tight Lines", and "Kelp", a collection of poems and short stories which can be found on the litbit page.
